(Grand Junction, CO – May 1, 2025) The Grand Junction Forestry Advisory Board met today at 8:30 a.m. in the conference room at 2529 High Country Court to discuss various community forestry programs, program reviews, and future events critical to sustaining and developing the city’s green spaces.

The meeting, chaired by Kamie Long, opened with the acceptance of the April meeting minutes, followed by an opportunity for public remarks. A remarkable request was brought forward involving the removal of a spruce tree located in the public right-of-way at 300 Cedar Ct., which required board discussion and approval.

The agenda’s new business segment included assessments of recent activities as well as plans for future events. The board reviewed the results of the Tree Seedling Delivery Program and the educational outreach at Chipeta Elementary. Both initiatives seek to strengthen ties between communities and local urban forestry operations.

Another topic of evaluation was the Southwest Arbor Fest, a community event promoting trees and conservation. Board members also addressed preparations for the city’s involvement in the forthcoming Farmer’s Market, which will have a forestry presence to encourage community engagement and provide educational materials.

Training programs remain a significant priority. The board examined forthcoming workshops on proper tree pruning techniques and contractor planting practices. The brochure accompanying the contractor training was also discussed to promote outreach and compliance with planting guidelines.

The Majestic Theatre screened some of Western Colorado’s first silent films and its first sound film. It was renamed the Mesa Theater in 1930, and in 1953, it underwent a comprehensive mid-century remodel that included a panoramic screen, stereo sound, and plush seats. Attention was devoted to the Chapter 8 Subcommittee, due to meet on May 22, to evaluate proposed revisions to city forestry regulations and guidelines.

City Forester Robert Davis delivered a department update, emphasizing a significant drive to complete seasonal planting operations. Over 100 new street trees have been planted, with close attention given to Emerson and Westlake Parks.

The meeting closed with an announcement that the next board meeting will be held on June 5, 2025, from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. at the Park Operations Office.
