On Monday April 26th 2021, parents and student of District 51 planned a walk-out. This walk-out was to protest the school requiring masks.
Gov. Polis released Colorado Rural areas of mask mandate on April 4. Gov. Polis believes that since many people are getting the vaccine, it is okay to leave the requirement of masks up to the business owner.
“Students should be able to choose if they want to wear a mask. They are sitting alone at their desks they should be able to take off their masks when not walking around.” Claire Wallace a mother of a D51 student said.
Many parents of students apart of school district 51 feel that they should be free to choose to wear a mask or not. Parents feel that since Gov. Polis lifted the mandate that it should be lifted from schools as well.
The recent lift of the mask mandate did not include schools, childcare centers, government buildings, prisons, emergency medical and other healthcare buildings.
“Students have gone eight months wearing masks in school and they can continue for another month.” A Dos Rios Elementary School Rec Tutor Lauren Arnold said. “Sure, the masks aren’t fun and they make things difficult but it has kept the children in school this long, so why not continue?”
The final day of school in D51 is May 21, 2021. There is no update for next school year’s mask requirements.
