Earth Day is celebrated all around the world with the same goal in mind: to raise awareness of the environment and gather to make a difference within a community. Here in the Grand Valley, many people celebrated this day, some celebrating at Hotel Maverick, where they were provided food, prizes, and community fun. In efforts to show their care for the planet and community, Hotel Maverick encouraged those visiting and those living here in Grand Junction to collect trash from around town and bring it in exchange for a raffle ticket where participants could win prizes that included a discount on a meal from Devil’s Kitchen, or a free hotel stay, and many more. The organizer of Earth Day Clean up at Hotel Maverick, Spencer Faupel, was inspired by a tradition in Alaska based on John Allen; a bus driver who would pick up trash and go to the bar after a day’s work of saving the planet. Doing good by the planet can be simple and fun.
“I was inspired to do this event out of an attempt to draw attention to Earth Day and the Hotel’s efforts in composting” Said Faupel.
This month, in honor of Earth Day, the hotel has made serious efforts to be better to the planet by composting pre-consumer waste like: fruits, vegetables, bread, pasta, coffee grounds, and eggshells. Hotel Maverick has taken Earth Day seriously and will continue to do so in order to spread awareness and better the environment of the Grand Valley.
“I care about our planet and our community” said Shawn Dasch, a worker and participant in the event.
