Spring Cleanup is wrapping up here in Junction and the timing, for some, couldn’t be better. Through the blocks of the historic district to the townhouses in the west of 12th, people have taken advantage of the extra time spent at home and the annual city service to clean house. Although, some new residents to central GJ might have been unaware of this tradition or may be unfamiliar with the guidelines for using the annual Spring Clean-up.

According to the city website, near the beginning of April every year, since the early 1900s, the city of Grand Junction provides free removal of bigger items and trash that weekly waste disposal would not normally dispose of. Frequent items include furniture, tree or plant trimmings, and bulky non-electronic toys and playsets. Spring Clean-up is also known to certain circles as the time of year to get a new used end table or a desk if you’re lucky. But besides the picking potential, it’s a great opportunity to downsize and declutter while also keeping our city looking as beautiful as it can.

Because all the refuse is taken to the Mesa County Landfill, there is a list of prohibited items that might have remained on curbs after the pickup crews came. Two of the most common  prohibited items on the streets this year are also the newest additions to this list; mattresses and box springs.

Other prohibited items include:

  • Electronics of any kind
  • Aerosol cans
  • Paint
  • Liquids or sludge of any kind
  • Batteries
  • Tires
  • Engine or Motor parts
  • Hazardous Chemicals
  • Ammunition
  • Shingles
  • Rubble from asphalt, concrete or brick
  • Any item longer than 6 feet

Many of these items can be taken to the Mesa County Landfill and disposed of, though due to COVID-19, the electronics disposal, the Hazardous Waste Facility, and Organic Materials Composting Facility are closed. It is advised that citizens keep these items until the landfill is up and running at full capacity again.

If you’re new to town, first of all, welcome! We hope you like it as much as we do!  Put Spring Clean-up on the calendar for next March. Get the yard ready for that garden, trim the trees, clean out the garage and the kids’ baby toys and maybe finally have an excuse (and the room) for that new living room table or couch.
